-Appearance-
Koumai is a very innocent, sweet looking girl. She stands just short of 5’5, but the first thing one would notice about her is that poof of silken black coils, all making up for a loose curled, afro-ish do. Her skin is smooth and the color of coffee, and she has thick but sculpted eyebrows above round eyes. She has a beautiful case of heterochromia; her right iris being a warm, deep brown, and her left being a vibrant hazel. Kou has full, blissful light pink lips and a round face, her jawline remaining soft yet still defined. Her hips are the widest part of her body, yet they’re still small, her waist extremely trim and her stomach flat. Koumai would definitely say she's pear shaped, would be hourglass if it weren't for her small breast, however she has the curves to match her little frame. She has small shoulders, thicker thighs and is adorably flat chested.
Since she dwells in New Orleans, the South can often be rather hot, she doesn't wear much. Crop tops, shorts, sweatpants, she loves wearing bikini tops beneath a loose, unbuttoned flannel. Hey, she has to beat the heat somehow! One would wonder why the little Loa is so self conscious.

-Persona-
Koumai is...well, shy. She is soft spoken and delicate in her ways, definitely a massive contrast to the aggressive war Loa she is related to. She is rarely the first to talk, quite often never speaking unless spoken to. But that's okay, she's more content in her head. She's rather cheerful, a gentle, loving soul that makes for an amazing friend, however she has trouble opening up. She's a giving, loyal friend who, despite being so shy, she will always stick up for the ones she loves. Koumai is passionate, yet easily scared by many things. Don't approach her quickly or sudden or you'll spook the little Creole.
However, she's got a feisty side as well. Kou is driven and spirited, stubborn in subtle, shy way. At random times she can find strength when to others she appears weak- this has worked in her advantage many times throughout her life. Opening up has always been an issue for the Haitian, since her mother beat the freedom of speech and will to be her own person out of her for a time. Koumai is learning to reclaim her identity however, and at times she may fall but she will always get back up; she's scrappy that way.

-Origin Story-

Koumai was never supposed to be. She was born in Haiti during the days of slavery, as a result of infidelity. Her father, Baron Samedi was the leader of the Guede Loa, or Loa of the Dead, and married to Maman Brigitte. Her mother, Danto, was the fierce queen of the Petro Loa, or Loa of War and Fire, sister to the queen of the Rada Loa, or Loa of Water and Peace. This was kept a whispered secret, just like Koumai's birth. Danto hid her away in their home, an abandoned Arawak temple where she, Freda (her sister) and Koumai now lived. And she kept her daughter locked away, in hopes Maman Brigitte would never find the newborn spirit and murder them both. She eventually would begin to train Koumai to take her place one day as queen of the ferocious Petro, but Koumai didn't seem like the daughter of war and death. She was a sweet, compassionate girl, mesmerized by the patterns she drew on walls, loving the stories her kind aunt Freda told her about the ocean and jungles of Haiti and the Dominican Republic- and this enraged Danto. With such a fine pedigree, how had her daughter turned out like this? It wasn't long before she put hands on the young Creole, abusing her when she did not act accordingly, even sometimes starving her as punishment for not living up to expectations. The world was hard enough, in her eyes, Koumai needed to be tougher if she was going to be let out to see the island.

Eventually, the time did come.
Around the time she turned sixteen, Danto finally allowed her to leave the temple- at a cost. She was forced into the dark, painful practices of Haitian Voodoo that Petro Loa were involved in. Words cannot describe the horrors the innocent girl faced at the hands of her mother and the rest of the Petro nation.
On top of being drastically different, Koumai never knew her father, Danto never told her nor allowed Freda to tell either. To add insult to injury, Koumai was fascinated with the human world. They lived in the Guinee, the spirit plain, alongside humans, able to see and affect them but in turns, humans could not see them. Koumai also could not see her own reflection, secretly she longed to be like some of the beautiful Creole girls on the island, spared from the brutality of slavery because of their mulatto beauty. She just wanted to be human. Little did she knew, the opportunity would present itself. One day during a rite, she saw a young Houngan named Ezekiel, handsome, smart and cunning, for more than just a slave boy. She made her presence known by casting a chicken feather down to him from the rafters of the barn where the rite was held.

After a vicious argument with her mother about who her father was, Koumai ran away, and sought shelter in the jungle. From a distance that night, she saw Ezekiel returning to the slave house after work in the tobacco fields- and she followed him. She could not bring herself into the human plain, but she could communicate. She made herself known by writing in the dust and dirt on the walls and floors. Their friendship soon blossomed. They met each other on the days that Koumai could get away from Danto, and Ezekiel could dodge the French slave masters. She wrote on paper, on walls, in the sand, in the dirt, as long as he could read it, it was the only way. Koumai longed to be with him. However tragedy soon struck when Danto discovered this but before Koumai could be locked away again, she escaped. In the jungle, she met a strange looking man by the name of South Faustian. He was no Frenchman, nor a Haitian. They spoke for awhile, she told him of her life, her troubles- he offered her a way out. He said there was a way to find her father, a way to leave the island and a way to allow her into the human plain. At first, she did not believe him, she had never heard of such a thing. He dared her to follow his instructions and trust him, telling her to "follow the unlucky one to the answers she sought."
This made absolutely no sense.
In the morning, she found herself wandering the small coastal town in search of her own answers, until she stumbled upon a little black cat, starved and beaten, half drowned. Koumai caught him a fish and fed him, attempting to revive the half dead feline. Once he was stronger, he beckoned her along, bolting through the hectic streets of Port-au-Prince. So she followed. The black cat lead her to a gigantic graveyard that night, where she wandered inside, and stumbled upon Baron Samedi. Immediately, he recognized her. How could he ever forget? Little did he know, his wife was watching. Maman Brigitte attempted to kill young Koumai and she barely escaped- with the cat of course. She ran, and when news of this spread across the Guinee, it reached Danto's ears first. Koumai could not bare her mothers treachery any longer. She found Ezekiel, told him everything and insisted they leave the island that night. So both of them ran halfway to South's rendezvous point, stopping in an abandoned mill to rest and keep travelling in the morning, however Danto was one step ahead of them.
She did not protect her daughter or Ezekiel, and allowed slave hunters to find them- or at least her daughters beloved. He was hung that night as an example to the other slaves. This devastated Koumai but she believed she would now be able to spend eternity with his guede (his spirit), but again Danto was ahead. When she had discovered their tryst, she stole his guede, robbing him of his afterlife.
Ezekiel was gone. For good.
Koumai could no longer bare it. She escaped that night at the ports with the little black cat, meeting South and he sailed across the Gulf of Mexico with her, leaving the Caribbean. Out on the water, he changed her, allowing her to manifest herself in the material plain. For the first time, she saw her reflection in the ocean depths, surprised to see her eyes did not match. One had stolen the color of Ezekiel's, the light gray replacing the hazel of the right orb. South, Koumai and Lucky the black cat then arrived in the US, Louisiana and South allowed her a chance in New Orleans. He gave her a complete fake identity, with schooling, social security, a job and an apartment to stay in. He enrolled her in college, promised to return and then left to fulfill his duties as a Witch of Centuries.
He still has not returned.
And Koumai still remains in hiding.

Ailments, Traumas & Disorders
-Spirit Sight-
Koumai is cursed to see what others cannot; spirits. They tend to bother her at random times, and it isn't uncommon to see her swatting the bastards away. They enjoy teasing her, and she see's them wherever she goes, often hovering around the rooms where their mortal bodies perished. Only sometimes does she have the strength to banish them. However, some leave her alone, some harass the poor girl, and when she swats at the empty air, she almost looks schizophrenic. So far, she has no idea how to get rid of the sight.

-Divination-
At random, Koumai can receive premonitions. She can't control this, sense when its about to happen or stop this. Sometimes she see's people she has never met before, or her own past and/or future, or those of the ones she loves. When it happens, she is subject to seizures and often cannot control herself, often coming back to life traumatized.

-Claustrophobia-

Being locked away for the majority of your life can really do some damage; Koumai is the perfect example of that. She cannot stand being locked or barricaded inside of anything and will often give way to hyperventilation and panic attacks. However, she isn't quite adverse to tight spaces.

Relationships
- Scout -
Koumai was the one to free the lonesome Rusalka from Lake Baikal in Russia, and the two travelled by plane back to America. There, Koumai attempted to help Scout as the two bonded in New Orleans. Koumai was running from her past, Scout was trying to find hers. Fate seemed to lead them together.
They're in a very close relationship now.

- Rosa Versailles -

Koumai's master, the Loa acts as the Eden Witch's familiar, which is a very sacred bond between Loa and a Mambo. They met in New Orleans by accident, Koumai was accidentally summoned into Rosa's hotel room. Soon, they will be travelling back to Haiti to initiate Rosa into voodoo. And bond the two for life.

Place of Living
-New Orleans-
After leaving Haiti, Koumai took up home in New Orleans, Louisiana. This city is a hub of culture and amazing food, a place of many Creoles, Cajuns and even more so, practitioners of voodooism. Here, Kou lays low, working as a waitress, avoiding all voodoo churches and graveyards where Guede Loa might be lurking in the dead of night. As a human, the little Loa is barely getting by, living paycheck to paycheck in an adorable apartment beside the cobblestone streets. She blends in well, trying to pay her rent and bills and support her pets, while starting her first year of college now. Yes, Koumai is often tired from her work; life is hard as a Loa in hiding, lost in the big bustling streets of New Orleans. But with her, magic and the dark arts are always around the corner....

"I fell in love with the lights and liquor."

Pets, Familiars & Companions

-Lilo-

Image result for tarantula tumblrThe first pet that Koumai ever adopted when she arrived in New Orleans. She saw him in the window of a pet store and fell in love. While other's brought home puppies and kittens, she adored the little tarantula. That night, she had spent whatever was left after rent on him, she just couldn't resist- even if it meant not eating that night. Lilo is quite kind for a tarantula, loving to crawl around the apartment, and chill inside of Koumai's hood. He's great, although he has been known to hiss.

-Lucky-
This is the very cat that South had prophesied about, the same cat who led Koumai through Haiti and took her to see her father for the first time. Ever since then, Lucky never left Koumai's side, even braving the Gulf of Mexico when Koumai and South left the Caribbean. Now, Lucky lives with his beloved master in New Orleans, half the time sleeping inside of the apartment, but enjoying the bustling streets of the city when he slips out through the cat door.
